Newsletter – July 2022

“white boxers”

newsletter no 4 – july 2022

greetings – we hope this months’

offering finds you and yours both fit and well

fred in a day

chris completed the fred whitton challenge ride on 3 july 2022 – organised and supported by kendal cycle club which he and lynn are fortunate to be members of.

chris riding the fred whitton challenge

it is a brutal ride for which chris has been focused on and training for since signing up for it in the new year – it seemed like a good idea at the time!!

cycling through keswick in the rain

chris’s mission was simply to peddle round the entire route – with no walking up the hardest sections of the various testing climbs.

he got to know the difficult passes intimately during many weekly pre-event training rides – and opted to change the 11/34 cassette on his giant contend bike for a 11/42 which kept him out of the red zone throughout and allowed him to achieve his aim.

this is a brilliant challenge which we can recommend doing at least once – and will be happy to offer any help or advice we can to anyone considering riding it.

facebook group asap

this month we will focus on setting up a top dog events facebook group – to which you will be invited to join via this newsletter next month

our mission in starting our events business in 1997 was fundamentally to spend our time with nice people – and the people who enjoy riding their bikes are among the nicest we have ever met

we have never wanted to be part of a travelling circus, setting up different events in different parts of the country week after week – but instead would prefer to build a community of fellow riders and invite them to enjoy some of the routes we at top dog events are fortunate to ride on a weekly basis

recent events have shown us that we have been steadily achieving this aim, sportive by sportive, and have enjoyed the many years of post-event feedback and messages of support people have sent us this season.  when we post things or produce these newsletters it is very much one way traffic and we would love to hear about what you are up to, and allow us all to get to know each other better, while sharing thoughts, rides, experiences and information

this support and sense of a riding community have been a huge reason for us resuming our fully supported programme of sportives from 2023 onwards – we miss them like mad to be honest

dates for next season – now live !!

dates for next year’s sportives have now been chosen and are now open for entry

  • 16 april 2023 – the ram – yorkshire dales 70+ miles (new route)
  • 18 june 2023 – the raptor – forest of bowland 63 miles
  • 20 august 2023 – the beast – lake district 108 miles
  • 15 october 2023 – the boxer – south lakes 66 miles

we are busy improving the routes, starting with the admin and looking at which yellow arrows we can do without

our cycling challenges

now that chris has ticked off the fred whitton we will change our focus to other rides on our wish list – namely lynns 100 miler, the brilliant cross border sportive (80 miler this time) in september and all being well a coast-to-coast (and back if time allows) trip in early october.

good luck with any challenges you have set yourself (we look forward to hearing about them on our face book group very soon) – have a great month’s riding + wear sunscreen.
